The classes will be up to three hours in length\, under 30 participants\, with the content and format developed by each expert. Each class will be presented in the native language of the expert with instructional material provided in Spanish\, English\, and Portuguese\, as needed. \nAttendees will be encouraged to attend the classes with cameras open and to engage in active discussions with the expert. \nMetais Modernos do patrimônio cultural: caracterização e conservação with Virginia Costa on Saturday\, October 19th\, 2024 from 10am-12:30pm EST (USA). This exciting Masterclass will provide practical information on the conservation of artifacts made from so-called ‘modern’ metals\, such as aluminum\, stainless steel\, and metallic coatings\, often poses a challenge due to the lack of accessible technical literature that provides a proper understanding of these materials’ nature. This knowledge is crucial for accurately characterizing the artifact\, both in terms of its identity and its conservation state. This course aims to emphasize the importance of preliminary characterization of artifacts for their long-term conservation through the presentation of technical aspects of some of these materials and case studies. \n  \nVirginia Costa: Metallurgical engineer from UFRGS (Brazil) and PhD in Materials Science from TU-Berlin (Germany)\, specializing in the conservation of metal cultural heritage. She has worked as an independent consultant for various institutions\, including the Musée du Louvre (Paris)\, Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna)\, English Heritage (London)\, Museu Paulista\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (São Paulo).
