APOYOnline is pleased to present the translation into Spanish and Portuguese by our volunteer translators of the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) poster “Framework for Preserving Heritage Collections: Strategies for Avoiding or Reducing Damage”.
The poster is used to guide an institution in the process of evaluating the agents of deterioration that threaten its collection. This easy-to-use reference teaching tool offers those interested in cultural heritage and professionals practical advice on how to protect collections from the agents of deterioration that threaten them. They are ranked in descending order, from the most devastating and fastest-acting to those that will give the team more time to act. The poster also emphasizes steps to take to prevent deterioration.
Recommendations are grouped into three categories: Building Features, Furniture Accessories, and Procedures. The recommendations follow the control steps (avoid, block, detect and respond) that form the basis of preventive conservation and focus on the specific location of objects (in transit, on display or in storage). This tool also presents issues related to climate change and sustainability.
The poster was originally designed and written by CCI scientists in 1994 and is a summary of many years of research. It was originally published in English and French. APOYOnline received authorization to carry out the translation into Spanish in 1998. Through the donation of synthetic paper from the Yupo Corporation of Virginia (USA), and the printing donated by Reese Press in Baltimore, Maryland (USA), this tool was produced. Printed in Spanish on one side and English on the opposite side. The free distribution to 4,000 APOYOnline members was carried out in collaboration with the Conservation Analytical Laboratory (CAL) of the Smithsonian Institution.
In 2017, the CCI revised and updated the poster. Through a joint agreement with the CCI, APOYOnline was authorized to translate into Spanish and Portuguese and obtained the copyright for the translation, printing and distribution of this new version. It was printed again on synthetic paper donated by Yupo Corporation of Virginia and the printing was done with the support of the Mellon Foundation. The translation into both languages was carried out in 2019 with the participation of volunteer translators who are members of the APOYOnline network, in alphabetical order:
Spanish: Amparo Rueda (Coordinator and Reviewer), Diana Díaz, Ingrid Frederick, Ramón Sanchez, Soledad Correa, Vera de la Cruz.
Portuguese: Beatriz Haspo (Coordinator and Reviewer), Carla Coelho, Clara Mosciaro, Cristina Lara, Gabriela Lucio Faria, Marcia Rizzo, Sandra Baruki, Teresa Lança
Today we can offer the “Framework for Preserving Heritage Collections: Strategies for Avoiding or Reducing Damage” printed in Spanish on one side and in Portuguese on the opposite side on synthetic paper donated by Yupo Corporation of Virginia (USA). The printing was made with funding from the Mellon Foundation and support from Sumiflex, C.A from Colombia.
